Mum's the Word

Imprints Booksellers - Tuesday, May 06, 2014

With Mother's Day fast approaching―it's this Sunday, fellas―now is the perfect time (read: the only time) to think about a gift that will express all those things with which we should shower our mums every day: gratitude, admiration, love and affection. For mums with young children a book that can be shared together makes a wonderful token of appreciation but also provides a great opportunity for family bonding time. Here's a selection of picture books that mothers and young children are sure to enjoy together:

I Love My Mummy by Giles Andreae, Paperback, $14.99 RRP

I love my Mummy very much, She's great to cuddle, soft to touch.

Wonderfully child-like verses about everything that makes mothers irresistible to their little ones are illustrated with bright and bold pictures in this sweet book. Toddler-friendly, funny, and loving, this is an experience to be shared time and time again.

Love you, Mum by Karen Hull, Hardcover, $9.99 RRP

I love you in the morning - 'Wake up, sleepyhead.'

I love you at breakfast - 'Time to get you fed.'

In this adorable picture book, Karen Hull's gentle illustrations of Australian animals are matched with a heart-warming text that celebrates the everyday love between mothers and their young children.

Mum's the Word by Timothy Knapman, Paperback, $14.99 RRP

What's the word that feels like a cuddle? Like splashing and sploshing through a great big puddle?

A funny rhyming tale with adorable illustrations showing the importance of a mother's love. When a little dog tries to find the word that feels like a cuddle and is as warm as a goodnight kiss, he discovers that the word is . . . 'Mum!'

Hey Mum, I Love You by Corinne Fenton, Hardcover, $18.95 RRP

I love you more than the prickliest tickle, the softest sigh, the best-kept secret . . .

A love letter to Mum, illustrated with beautiful photographs of baby animals and their mothers. Corinne Fenton's sweet and thoughtful text reminds us just how special Mums really are.

Of course, if your child is too old to sit on mum's lap and read a picture book, mum doesn't have to miss out! Whether she prefers moving memoirs, engrossing fiction or fascinating history, there are plenty of books available which will make wonderful presents for Mother's Day.

Chasing the Rose: An Adventure in the Venetian Countryside by Andrea di Robilant, Harcover, $29.99 RRP

From the author of the best-selling A Venetian Affair, here is the charming chronicle of his search for the identity of a mysterious old rose. Andrea di Robilant’s tale takes us back to the time of Josephine Bonaparte, as well as into some of the most delightful rose gardens in Italy today, brought to colorful life on the page in the watercolors of artist Nina Fuga.

The Claimant by Janette Turner Hospital, paperback, $29.99 RRP

So then, here it is. The unadorned un-self-flattering gospel, the never-before-told story our intricately intertwined lives . . . Listen: I know things that no one else knows. Trust me.

From one of our foremost novelists, The Claimant is a compelling and ravishingly readable novel about the fluid, shifting and ultimately elusive nature of identity and the reasons why people seek to change their names, their identities or their personalities.

Paris Haute Couture by Anne Zazzo, Hardcover, $90.00 RRP

A comprehensive history of high fashion in Paris from Madame Grès and Balenciaga to Yves Saint Laurent and Yohji Yamamoto, spanning all aspects from clothing and accessories to perfume. This chronological study traces the history of the esteemed couture houses of Paris, examining the role of the designer and the extraordinary craftsmanship behind the finished creations, the place of haute couture in Parisian culture, and its influence in the wider fashion industry.

So these are our best gift suggestions for Mother's Day, but if we may offer one more: the most precious gift of all for a busy mother is time to do the things she enjoys. A book will be even better received if it comes with the promise of a few lesiurely reading hours as well!
