The enormous hoard of beautiful gold military objects found in 2009 in a field in Staffordshire has focused huge attention on the mysterious world of 7th and 8th century Britain.Clearly the product of a sophisticated, wealthy, highly militarized society, the objects beg innumerable questions about how we are to understand the people who once walked across the same landscape we inhabit, who are our ancestors and yet left such a slight record of their presence.

Britain after Rome brings together a wealth of research and imaginative engagement to bring us as close as we can hope to get to the tumultuous centuries between the departure of the Roman legions and the arrival of Norman invaders nearly seven centuries later. As towns fell into total decay, Christianity disappeared and wave upon wave of invaders swept across the island, it can be too easily assumed that life in Britain became intolerable - and yet this is the world in which modern languages and political arrangements were forged, a number of fascinating cultures rose and fell and tantalizing glimpses, principally through the study of buildings and burials, can be had of a surprising and resilient place.

The result of a lifetime of work, Robin Fleming's major new addition to the Penguin History of Britain could not be more opportune. A richly enjoyable, varied and surprising book, Britain after Rome allows its readers to see Britain's history in a quite new light.

A very good copy, edges of text block somewhat stained, in a very good dust jacket.

Bruce Chatwin's death in 1989 brought a meteoric career to an abrupt end, since he burst onto the literary scene in 1977 with his first book, In Patagonia.

Chatwin himself was different things to different people: a journalist, a photographer, an art collector, a restless traveller and a bestselling author; he was also a married man, an active homosexual, a socialite who loved to mix with the rich and famous, and a single-minded loner who explored the limits of extreme solitude.

From unrestricted access to Chatwin's private notebooks, diaries and letters, Nicholas Shakespeare has compiled the definitive biography of one of the most charismatic and elusive literary figures of our time.

Famous for its ingenuity and wit, "The Canterbury Tales" is a major part of England's literary heritage. From the exuberant Wife of Bath's Arthurian legend to the Miller's worldly, ribald farce, these tales can be taken as a mirror of fourteenth century London and medieval society. Incorporating every style of Medieval narrative - bawdy anecdote, allegorical fable and courtly romance - the tales encompass the blend of universal human themes and individual personal detail that have fascinated readers for over 600 years. Here they are retold in full by Peter Ackroyd. The edition also includes an introduction by Ackroyd, detailing some of the historical background to Chaucer and the Tales, and details why he has been inspired to translate them for a new generation of readers.

In the tradition of "Cod and "Olives: a fascinating journey into the hidden history, culture, and commerce of caviar.
Once merely a substitute for meat during religious fasts, today caviar is an icon of luxury and wealth. In "Caviar, Inga Saffron tells, for the first time, the story of how the virgin eggs of the prehistoric-looking, bottom-feeding sturgeon were transformed from a humble peasant food into a czar's delicacy-and ultimately a coveted status symbol for a rising middle class. She explores how the glistening black eggs became the epitome of culinary extravagance, while taking us on a revealing excursion into the murky world of caviar on the banks of the Volga River and Caspian Sea in Russia, the Elbe in Europe, and the Hudson and Delaware Rivers in the United States. At the same time, Saffron describes the complex industry caviar has spawned, illustrating the unfortunate consequences of mass marketing such a rare commodity.
The story of caviar has long been one of conflict, crisis, extravagant claims, and colorful characters, such as the Greek sea captain who first discovered the secret method of transporting the perishable delicacy to Europe, the canny German businessmen who encountered a wealth of untapped sturgeon in American waters, the Russian Communists who created a sophisticated cartel to market caviar to an affluent Western clientele, the dirt-poor poachers who eked out a living from sturgeon in the aftermath of the Soviet collapse and the "caviar Mafia" that has risen in their wake, and the committed scientists who sacrificed their careers to keep caviar on our tables.
Filled with lore and intrigue, "Caviar is a captivating work of culinary, natural, and cultural history.

With a gimlet eye and a caustic wit, Mark Twain is the quintessential tour guide to parts known and unknown, and in these 68 travel yarns he trots readers around the globe from Hawaii to the Holy Land, from Lake Tahoe to Berlin—"Europe's Chicago"—with a combination of breezy insouciance and droll barbarism. This fine edition, edited by Mark Twain Prize founder Peter Kaminsky, includes pieces from Innocents Abroad, Roughing It, and A Tramp Abroad, as well as a variety of rarely seen articles and lectures, trips to magical realms ("Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven"), and a letter from 18-year-old Sam Clemens to his mother.

"There is no great American writer easier to love than Mark Twain, and—as I realized reading this delicious collection—no part of Twain's oeuvre easier to love than his travel writing. Wandering around exotic places and among foreign people gives him the ideal opportunity to be his uniquely engaging self—not quite an innocent or a tramp but a curious, clear-eyed and totally American chronicler abroad: totally game, bewitched and appalled, funny and astounded."—Kurt Andersen

This critical biography of Australian novelist Christina Stead, drawing on her private correspondence and conversations with intimate friends, paints a picture of a passionate and intense woman for whom fame came too late in life, and sheds new light on the impulses behind her writing. It describes her tempestuous early years in parochial Sydney, her escape to London, the discovery of love with Bill Blake, Paris in the 1920s and the move to New York. After the war they returned to Europe but moved restlessly from place to place. Then, in 1965, "The Man Who Loved Children" was reissued, turning Stead into an international celebrity.

What was it about the civilization of Western Europe that allowed it to trump the outwardly superior empires of the Orient? The answer, Niall Ferguson argues, was that the West developed six "killer applications"?that the Rest lacked: competition, science, democracy, medicine, consumerism and the work ethic. The key question today is whether or not the West has lost its monopoly on these six things. If so, Ferguson warns, we may be living through the end of Western ascendancy.

'I am sister to the day and night. I am sister to the woods.'

Sister Clarisse, a nun in the House of St Mary at Clerkenwell, experiences visions. She dreams of the English King. Are her prophecies the babblings of the crazed? Or can she 'see' a future in which Henry Bolingbroke overthrows Richard II?

This clever and colourful novel begins with The Nun's Tale, and continues with The Friar's Tale, The Merchant's Tale and The Clerk's Tale-. Thus, story by story, Peter Ackroyd builds his portrait of medieval London. The people are disenchanted by the Church, with its wealth and corruption, its Pope in Rome and its Pope in Avignon. But heresy is dangerous- almost as dangerous as rebellion.

This is a novel about spies and counter-spies, radicals and idealists, murderers and arsonists, sects and secret societies...
