Title: AN ATLAS OF COUNTRIES THAT DONT EXIST
    Author: MIDDLETON NICK
    Format: HARD COVER
Publishing status: TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK

Acclaimed travel writer and Oxford geography don Nick Middleton takes us on a magical tour of countries that, lacking diplomatic recognition or UN membership, inhabit a world of shifting borders, visionary leaders and forgotten peoples.

Most of us think we know what a country is, but in truth the concept is rather slippery. From Catalonia to the Crimea, and from Africa's last colony to the European republic that enjoyed just a solitary day of independence, the places in this book may lie on the margins of legitimacy, but all can be visited in the real world.

Beautifully illustrated by fifty regional maps, each shadowy country is literally cut out of the page of this book. Alongside stories, facts and figures, this Atlas brings to life a dreamlike world of nations that exist only in the minds of the people who live there.

    PRESTON ALEX
    ISBN: 9781472152244
Title: AS KINGFISHERS CATCH FIRE : Birds and Books
    Author: PRESTON ALEX

Publishing status: SEPTEMBER 2017 NEW RELEAS

When Alex Preston was 15, he stopped being a birdwatcher. Adolescence and the scorn of his peers made him put away his binoculars, leave behind the hides and the nature reserves and the quiet companionship of his fellow birders. His love of birds didn't disappear though. Rather, it went underground, and he began birdwatching in the books that he read, creating his own personal anthology of nature writing that brought the birds of his childhood back to brilliant life.

Looking for moments 'when heart and bird are one', Preston weaves the very best writing about birds into a personal and eccentric narrative that is as much about the joy of reading and writing as it is about the thrill of wildlife. Moving from the 'high requiem' of Keats's nightingale to the crow-strewn sky at the end of Alan Garner's THE WEIRDSTONE OF BRISINGAMEN, from Ted Hughes's brooding 'Hawk in the Rain' to the giddy anthropomorphism of JONATHAN LIVINGSTONE SEAGULL, this is a book that will make you look at birds, at the world, in a newer, richer light.

Beautifully illustrated and illuminated by the celebrated graphic artist Neil Gower, AS KINGFISHERS CATCH FIRE is a book to love and to hold, to return to again and again, to marvel at the way that authors across the centuries have captured the endless grace and variety of birds.

The Australian National Dictionary (AND) is a dictionary of Australianisms. It includes words and meanings that have originated in Australia, that have a greater currency within Australia than elsewhere, or that have a special significance in Australian history. Whereas the first edition of the dictionary, published in 1988, contained about 10,000 headwords, compounds, idioms, and derivatives, this second edition contains over 16,000. The AND differs from general dictionaries in being based on historical principles, in the manner of the comprehensive Oxford English Dictionary (OED). The aim of AND2 is to chart the historical development of Australian words the definitions begin with the oldest sense and move through to the most recent sense. As part of this history, it includes all obsolete words and all obsolete senses; because it is concerned with the complete history of a word, the historical dictionary places more emphasis on the etymology of a word than does the general dictionary.

The author of Reading the OED presents an eye-opening look at language 'mistakes'' and how they came to be accepted as correct - or not.

English is a glorious mess of a language, cobbled together from a wide variety of sources and syntaxes, and changing over time with popular usage. Many of the words and usages we embrace as standard and correct today were at first considered slang, impolite, or just plain wrong.

Whether you consider yourself a stickler, a nitpicker, or a rule-breaker in the know, Bad English is sure to enlighten, enrage, and perhaps even inspire. Filled with historic and contemporary examples, the book chronicles the long and entertaining history of language mistakes, and features some of our most common words and phrases, including:

    Decimate
    Hopefully
    Enormity
    That/which
    Enervate/energize
    Bemuse/amuse
    Literally/figuratively
    Ain't Irregardless
    Socialist
    OMG
    Stupider

Lively, surprising, funny, and delightfully readable, this is a book that will settle arguments among word lovers - and it's sure to start a few, too.

Mission statements are everywhere: you have to have one, whether you're a Fortune 500 company, a hedge fund, a primary school, a church or a hockey club. Without a mission statement, who would know what your values are, or what your culture is? And how then, going forward, will you get buy-in on your strategy and uptake of your brand?

The language of modern management has triumphed, transforming clear, everyday communication into meaningless sludge. To sound professional, you must express everything in abstract nouns, and each noun in terms of another one; you must talk about synergy and strategy, uptake and outcomes and outputs and inputs, key performance indicators and drivers and customer experience - even if your 'customers' are in fact patients in your hospital. This language is deliberately obscure and falsely scientific; what is more worrying, those who use it have lost the very ability to think clearly.

From Don Watson, the author of Death Sentence and Weasel Words, comes this new assortment of noxious management drivel and financial market blather. Read them aloud - then try the exercises. The disease may not yet have run its course, but Watson's acerbic wit restores hope in the power of well-chosen words to entertain and to inspire.

Jean-Benoit Nadeau and Julie Barlow spent a decade traveling back and forth to Paris as well as living there. Yet one important lesson never seemed to sink in: how to communicate comfortably with the French, even when you speak their language.

In The Bonjour Effect Jean-Benoit and Julie chronicle the lessons they learned after they returned to France to live, for a year, with their twin daughters. They offer up all the lessons they learned and explain, in a book as fizzy as a bottle of the finest French champagne, the most important aspect of all: the French don't communicate, they converse. To understand and speak French well, one must understand that French conversation runs on a set of rules that go to the heart of French culture. Why do the French like talking about "the decline of France"? Why does broaching a subject like money end all discussion? Why do the French become so aroused debating the merits and qualities of their own language? Through encounters with school principals, city hall civil servants, gas company employees, old friends and business acquaintances, Julie and Jean-Benoît explain why, culturally and historically, conversation with the French is not about communicating or being nice. It's about being interesting.

After reading The Bonjour Effect, even readers with a modicum of French language ability will be able to hold their own the next time they step into a bistro on the Left Bank.

An exploration of how reading guides us, comforts us and helps us make sense of the world and our place in it.

From the author of the best-selling and beloved THE END OF YOUR LIFE BOOK CLUB - a wonderfully engaging new book: both a celebration of reading in general and an impassioned recommendation of specific books that can help guide us through our daily lives.

'I'm on a search and have been all my life: to find books to help me make sense of the world, to help me become a better person, to help me get my head around the big questions that I have, and figure out the answers to some of the small ones while I'm at it' Will Schwalbe

'I've always believed that everything you need to know you can find in a book', writes Will Schwalbe in his introduction to this thought-provoking, heart-felt, and often inspiring new book about books.

In each chapter he makes clear the ways in which a particular book has helped to shape how he leads his own life and the ways in which it might help to shape ours. He talks about what brought him to each book - or vice versa; the people in his life he associates each book with; how each has led him to other books; how each is part of his understanding of himself in the world.

And he relates each book to a question of our daily lives, for example: Melville's BARTELBY, THE SCRIVENER speaks to quitting; 1984 to disconnecting from our electronics; James Baldwin's GIOVANNI'S ROOM to the power of connecting with people face to face; Anne Morrow Lindbergh's GIFT FROM THE SEA to taking time to recharge; Anne Lamott's BIRD BY BIRD to being sensitive to the surrounding world; THE LITTLE PRINCE to finding friends; Elie Wiesel's NIGHT to choosing to do something in the face of injustice; Paula Hawkins's THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN to trusting.

Here, too, are books by Dickens, Daphne Du Maurier, Murakami, Edna Lewis, E.B. White and Hanya Yanagihara, among many others. A treasure of a book for everyone who loves books, loves reading, and loves to hear the answer to the question: 'What have you been reading lately?'

In an age where we can Google the answer to everything, Will Schwalbe has always believed that the answer to everything can actually be found in a book if we just slow down enough to find out and then take the time to think about it and share with others. BOOKS FOR LIVING is a wide ranging exploration of what books can teach us in the modern age.
