    From the much-admired correspondent comes a powerful, moving and important book on the effect of gun crime on children in the US.

    On Saturday 23 November 2013 ten children were shot dead. The youngest was nine; the oldest was nineteen. They fell in suburbs, hamlets and ghettos. None made the national news. It was just another day in the death of America, where on average seven children and teens are killed by guns daily.

    Younge picked this day at random, searched for their families and tells their stories. What emerges is a sobering, searing, portrait of youth and guns in contemporary America.

    He raises hackles or receives resounding cheers, he's loved or hated but never ignored. Christopher Hitchens is possibly the most provocative writer of our time, fearless and forthright with no subject off limits. This volume of essays spans a remarkable four decades of writing. From early articles in the New Statesman where he worked alongside writers such as Ian McEwan and Martin Amis, through to his pieces for Salon, The Atlantic and Vanity Fair, these articles display his rare genius, indomitable wit and singular command of language. World figures from Clinton to Mother Teresa, Kissinger to Benazir Bhutto go under his unforgiving microscope. Issues from Vietnam to Iraq, Afghanistan to Iran and literary musings on the leading writers of the last fifty years form the richest tapestry a reader could ask. 'Don't mince words' is the title of one of these pieces. Nor does he, nor has he over the course of a dozen books of which the most recent are the best selling God is not Great and Hitch-22, and hundreds of articles of which the cream of the crop is here.

    In this age of constant movement and connectedness, when so many of us are all over the place, perhaps staying in one place - and locating everything we need for peace and happiness there - is a more exciting prospect, and a greater necessity than ever before.

    Through his extensive interviews with creative geniuses of our day, as well as historical records and his own life experience, acclaimed author Pico Iyer paints a picture of why so many have found such richness in stillness and how - from Marcel Proust to Blaise Pascal to Phillipe Starck - they've gathered such rare and exhilarating fruits there. He explores the counter-intuitive truth: the more ways we have to connect, the more many of us seem desperate to unplug.
    Iyer reflects that this is perhaps the reason why more and more people - even those with no religious commitment - seem to be turning to yoga, or meditation, or tai chi.

    These aren't New Age fads so much as ways to connect with what could be called the wisdom of an earlier age. There is even a growing trend toward observing an "Internet sabbath" every week, turning off online connections from Friday night to Monday morning, so as to try to revive those ancient customs known as family meals and conversation.

    In the first of four volumes on the Howard Government’s nearly 12 years in office, The Ascent to Power covers the 1996 election and the practical challenges of the Coalition’s first year in power, including its handling of the Port Arthur massacre, relationships with the Australian Public Service, management of Senate crossbenchers, and reversing the budget ‘black hole’ and repaying government debt.

    With contributions from John Howard, Liberal and Labor politicians, media commentators, key public servants, and academics, The Ascent to Power takes a critical look at the Howard Government’s rise to power, its performance, successes, shortcomings, and failures, in what Paul Kelly calls the ‘foundational year’.

    Drawing on unpublished documents from John Howard’s papers held at UNSW Canberra, the book will shape future assessments of the Howard Government and help determine its enduring place in Australian history.

    In the late 1970s, 2000 Vietnamese arrived in Australia by boat, fleeing persecution. Their arrival presented a challenge to politicians, but the way the Fraser government handled it, and the resettlement of tens of thousands more Indochinese refugees, marked a turning point in Australia’s immigration history. Turn-backs and detention were proposed, and rejected. Claire Higgins’ important book recounts these extraordinary events. It is driven by the question of how we moved from a humanitarian approach to policies of mandatory detention - including on remote islands - and boat turn-backs. Like now, the politicians of the time wanted to control entry. Unlike now, they also wanted to respect Australia’s obligations under international law. It’s about how governments and policy-makers have dealt with the confluence of issues emerging from the end of the ‘White Australia’ policy, a recognition of international responsibilities, and shifting public opinion. Strikingly, it also shows the extent to which the attitudes and statements of politicians and policymakers can shape the mood of the country, for better and worse.

    An engaging guide to preventing dark-side behaviour, and dealing with any nasty, negative narcissists we encounter in the workplace.

    The idea of leadership failure and derailment has been brushed under the carpet for far too long and only now are statistics appearing on the sheer number of leaders who fail at their jobs. Backstabbers and Bullies provides the latest psychiatric and clinical perspectives on dark-side behaviour, including:

    - recognising and coping with over-confident, narcissistic and psychopathic leaders;
    - causes of leadership derailment and failure;
    - corrupt corporate cultures; and
    - the criminal personality.

    Fascinating reading for anyone who has worked alongside a corporate psychopath, business narcissist or histrionic show-off, Backstabbers and Bullies goes beyond the science to explain how to better understand, manage and prevent dark-side behaviour, as well as presenting advice for reducing derailment potential for yourself, your colleagues and your organisation.

    Bad Feminist is collection of frank, funny, whip-smart and spot-on essays from one of the most-watched young cultural observers of her generation, Roxane Gay.

    In these funny and insightful essays, Roxane Gay takes us through the journey of her evolution as a woman (Sweet Valley High) of colour (The Help) while also taking readers on a ride through culture of the last few years (Girls, Django in Chains) and commenting on the state of feminism today (abortion, Chris Brown). The portrait that emerges is not only one of an incredibly insightful woman continually growing to understand herself and our society, but also one of our culture.

    Bad Feminist is a sharp, funny and sincere look at the ways in which the culture we consume becomes who we are, and an inspiring call-to-arms of all the ways we still need to do better.

    A Banquet of Consequences is a lively exploration by financial expert Satyajit Das on why, following the global credit crunch, the world is entering a period of prolonged economic stagnation, and what that means for all of us.

    The factors that caused the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 have not been addressed, notes Satyajit Das in this brilliantly clear-eyed account of the state of the world economy. Global debt today is higher than it was before the crisis. The big banks, bailed out by taxpayers at the height of the GFC, are now bigger than ever, by an astonishing 40 per cent. The problem of unfunded and unsustainable welfare entitlements remains unresolved. In most developed countries, economic growth, employment, income and investment are still struggling to return to pre-crisis levels. Meanwhile the developing countries have not become the new drivers of global prosperity they were expected to be.

    The crux of the issue, argues Das, is that economic growth cannot continue indefinitely. The reasons for this include demographic changes, lower rates of innovation, slower improvements in productivity, the increasing scarcity of natural resources, the impact of global warming, the reversal of globalisation, and the rising inequality within and between nations. The strategies deployed by governments to promote growth have failed. What's really needed is unpopular structural change, which will result in a reduction in wealth and living standards. World leaders know what to do, they just don 't know how to get re-elected after they 've done it. People don 't want to hear that their time of plenty has reached the end.

    Starting with the long period of expansion that followed the end of World War II, A Banquet of Consequences traces the cycle of booms and busts that culminated in the GFC, working through to the present day and outlining a future without growth. It looks at the ill-advised policies implemented by governments that have left jobs, investment and living standards stagnant while driving prices of shares, property and financial investment ever higher, creating the conditions for a financial crash on a scale even larger than the last crisis.

    The end of growth has vast consequences for us all, among them the increasing difficulty of finding a secure job with an adequate wage, buying a house and saving for retirement, a loss of trust in banks and political processes, and, perhaps most importantly, the impact on future generations, who will be forced to bear the cost of the problems.

    Satyajit Das is well known as a commentator and author, having anticipated the 2008 crisis and much of what has happened subsequently. He has penned both reference works and two international bestsellers, Traders, Guns & Money and Extreme Money. Written for the lay reader, A Banquet of Consequences is peppered with witty anecdotes and cultural references both traditional and popular. Satyajit Das is perhaps the only finance writer who can simultaneously make you outraged and chuckle as you read, and the experience is a delight.

    'Fascinating reading . . . explaining not only the high-minded theory behind the business and its various products but the sometimes sordid reality of the industry.' Financial Times, London, on Traders, Guns & Money

    Tony Abbott came to the prime ministership lauded as the most effective leader of the opposition since Whitlam. Why then did he fail to succeed in the job to which he had aspired for decades??Frontbenchers leaked about cabinet processes to the media while backbenchers complained about the lack of access to their leader.?

    Abbott's long apprenticeship in religion, journalism and political life prepared him for neither the mundane business of managing people nor the commanding heights of national leadership. Public?goodwill evaporated after a tough first budget. Inside the Liberal Party individual ambitions and a succession of poor polls fuelled increasing concern that the next election was unwinnable.

    Battleground chronicles the paradox of the Abbott prime ministership: steadfast loyalty when pragmatism was required; social values at odds with community attitudes; stubbornness when tactics and strategy were essential. All would bring him undone.

    One day a couple of years ago, 300 migrants were kidnapped between the remote, dusty border towns of Altar, Mexico, and Sasabe, Arizona. Over half of them were never heard from again.

    Oscar Martinez, a young writer from El Salvador, was in Altar at the time of the abduction, and his story of the migrant disappearances is only one of the harrowing stories he tells after spending two years traveling up and down the migrant trail from Central America to the US border.

    More than a quarter of a million Central Americans make this increasingly dangerous journey each year, and last year 18,000 of them were kidnapped. Martinez writes in beautiful, lyrical prose about clinging to the tops of freight trains; finding respite, work and hardship in shelters and brothels; and riding shotgun with the border patrol. Here is the first book to illuminate this harsh mass migration in the age of the narcotraficantes.

    'The Beast is extraordinary, first, for the courage that Martinez summoned to write it; and, second, for the hidden lives he reveals. No other writer has got this close to a migration that Amnesty International estimates left 70,000 unaccounted for between 2006 and 2012. Read together, the vivid personal stories told here have the force of a novel' Financial Times

    A extraordinary, eye-opening look behind the razor wire into life inside the walls of one of the most notorious hospitals for the criminally insane, a hellish world inhabited by mass murderers, serial killers, and other figures from our nightmares.

    Psychiatrist Stephen Seager was no stranger to locked psych wards when he accepted a job at California's Gorman State hospital, known locally as 'Gomorrah', but nothing could have prepared him for what he encountered when he stepped through its gates, a triple sally port behind the twenty-foot walls topped with shining coils of razor wire. Gorman State is one of the nation's largest forensic mental hospitals, dedicated to treating the criminally insane. Unit C, where Seager was assigned, was reserved for the 'bad actors', the mass murderers, serial killers, and the real-life Hannibal Lecters of the world.Against a backdrop of surreal beauty - a campus-like setting where peacocks strolled the well-kept lawns - is a place of remarkable violence, a place where a small staff of clinicians are expected to manage a volatile population of prison-hardened ex-cons, where lone therapists lead sharing circles with psychopaths, where homemade weapons and contraband circulate freely, and where patients and physicians often measure their lives according to how fast they can run.

    Behind the Gates of Gomorrah affords an eye-opening look inside a facility to which few people have ever had access. Honest, reflective, and at times darkly funny, Seager's gripping account of his experiences at Gorman State hospital give us an extraordinary insight into a unique and terrifying world, inhabited by figures from our nightmares.
