    "The idea for this cookbook came about when my mother and I were looking through an old book of recipes that her grandmother, Kathleen, hand-wrote for her when she married my father in 1963. All the measurements were in ounces, and of course there were no pictures in the book. We were admiring the curly old handwriting, yellowed pages and strange ingredients, and I thought, “This is silly, there’s so much history in this book. I need to cook some of these recipes!”

    I was curious to find out what the food looked and tasted like.The cooking and photographing of the finished products became a documentation process, and before long I decided to make a cookbook of the recipes to keep my great-grandmother’s history alive. My mother suggested we make it a family cookbook by asking the rest of the family to send in their favourite recipes. I took it one step further by including everyone in the extended family, young and old, alive and dead!

    From England to Australia to Singapore, we’ve collected recipes from family members up to eight generations apart. The oldest recipe you’ll find is a list of ingredients for traditional cough medicine, scribbled in a copy of the Bible by my great-great-great-great grandfather in 1853. It includes some unusual ingredients: half an ounce of squills, oil of sweet almond, syrup of mulberries and paregoric elixir. The newest recipe is from my six-year-old son Angus, who has contributed a recipe for hamburgers.

    Cooking has been my creative outlet since my children came along. In my household, there’s always someone in the kitchen making something. It’s total involvement – my husband Will chats to me while I’m cooking, my daughter Sophia will pick the parsley, my oldest daughter Chloe will be baking a cake – the kitchen really is the heart of the house and I’m pretty much always there.

    I’m incredibly proud of this book, as is everyone in my extended family. Everyone has embraced the project and feels connected to this delicious documentation of our history. And it all started with my great-grandmother Kathleen (or K.M., as she was known) and her beautiful curly handwriting. K.M. had a colourful life and a lot of secrets that are long forgotten, but at least we have her recipe for trifle. This book is a way to keep the memories of those fascinating ancestors alive, and introduce new generations to delicious, nourishing food."
