In the long, hot summer of 1989, Ben and Fab are best friends.

Growing up in a small country town, they spend their days playing cricket, yabbying in local dams, wanting a pair of Nike Air Maxes and not talking about how Fab's dad hits him or how the sudden death of Ben's next-door neighbour unsettled him. Almost teenagers, they already know some things are better left unsaid.

Then a newcomer arrived in the Wimmera. Fab reckoned he was a secret agent and he and Ben staked him out. Up close, the man's shoulders were wide and the veins in his arms stuck out, blue and green. His hands were enormous, red and knotty. He looked strong. Maybe even stronger than Fab's dad. Neither realised the shadow this man would cast over both their lives.

Twenty years later, Fab is still stuck in town, going nowhere but hoping for somewhere better. Then a body is found in the river, and Fab can't ignore the past any more.

WIMMERA is the 2016 Winner of the Crime Writers' Association Debut Dagger (UK).

At first glance, Gabriel Cardona was the poster boy American teenager: athletic, bright, handsome and charismatic. But the streets of his border town of Laredo, Texas, were poor and dangerous, and it wasn't long before Gabriel, along with some childhood friends, abandoned his promising future for the allure of the Zetas, a drug cartel with roots in the Mexican military, boosting cars and smuggling drugs. Within a few months they were to become some of the cartel's most-feared killers: Los Lobos, The Wolf Boys.

Mexican-born detective Robert Garcia had worked hard all his life, struggling to raise his family in America. As violence spilled over the border into his adopted country, Detective Garcia's pursuit of the boys and their cartel leaders would place him face to face with the terrible consequences of a war he came to see as unwinnable.

Through the eyes of these young boys, whose actions and lives blended teenage normalcy with monstrous barbarity, Dan Slater takes us from the Sierra Madre mountaintops to the dusty, dark alleys of small-town Texas on a harrowing, often brutal journey into the heart of the Mexican drug trade. An astonishing, immersive, non-fiction thriller informed by extraordinary research and vivid detail, Wolf Boys uncovers the dark truth about Mexico's cartels and the tragic failure of the ‘war on drugs’.

This is the fifth book in the new Penguin Maigret series: Georges Simenon's gripping tale of small town suspicion and revenge, in Linda Asher's timeless translation. There was an exaggerated humility about her. Her cowed eyes, her way of gliding noiselessly about without bumping into things, of quivering nervously at the slight-est word, were the very image of a scullery maid accustomed to hardship. And yet he sensed, beneath that image, glints of pride held firmly in check. She was anaemic. Her flat chest was not formed to rouse desire. Nevertheless, she was strangely appealing, perhaps because she seemed troubled, despondent, sickly. In the windswept seaside town of Concarneau, a local wine merchant is shot. In fact, someone is out to kill all the influential men and the entire town is soon sent into a state of panic. For Maigret, the answers lie with the pale, downtrodden waitress Emma, and a strange yellow dog lurking in the shadows...

Penguin is publishing the entire series of Maigret novels.

This is a revised edition of Linda Asher's existing translation.
    "Compelling, remorseless, brilliant". (John Gray).

"One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century...Simenon was unequalled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories". (Guardian).

Author Biography: Georges Simenon (1903-1989) was born on February 12th, 1903 in Liege, Belgium. At the age of nineteen, Simenon embarked to Paris to begin a career as a writer. In 1923 he began publishing under various pseudonyms, and in 1929 began the Inspector Maigret series which helped elevate him to a household name in continental Europe. His prolific output of more than four hundred novels and the gripping, dark realism of his prose has cemented him as an inedlible fixture of twentieth century literature. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland. Linda Asher is the former fiction editor at the "New Yorker" and the award-winning translator of works by Milan Kundera and Victor Hugo, among other celebrated authors.

Ex-detective Frank Swann is now on the outside of the police force - the only way to get justice done in Perth. In 1979 the city is a place of celebration and corruption. There are street parties, official glad-handing - even a royal visit - to commemmorate a century and a half since colonisation. But behind the festivities a new kind of land grab is going on, this time for mining leases. The price of gold is up and very few, it seems, are incorruptible before its lure.

When Swann is hired to probe the suicide of a respected geologist, he's drawn into a mire of vice and fraud, at the centre of which sit the directors of a gold-lease consortium. They're an unlikely collection of the seemingly respectable and the clearly not, with one thing in common: a lust for wealth that verges on a disease.

For an old-school tough guy like Swann, that's a gauntlet he just has to pick up . . .
