Robert Hannaford is one of Australia's foremost portrait artists, but this is only one aspect of his work. Robert Hannaford: Natural eye, the first book to be published on this acclaimed artist, reveals a richer, fuller story: of an artist who deliberately places representation over abstraction, producing art that celebrates the visual world in all its variety while interrogating its place in the human imagination. Hannaford has been a finalist in every Archibald Prize exhibition since 1991, and winner of the Archibald People's Choice Prize on three occasions. His subjects include Dame Joan Sutherland, Sir Donald Bradman, Sir Edward Woodwards, Hon. Paul Keating, Jean Blackburn, Hon. Bob Hawke, Sir Gerard Brennen, Professor Rolf Prince and Hugh Stretton.

Most Australians live in cities, clinging to the coast and looking outwards towards the ocean. Yet almost all of us feel closely connected to the country, even if we hardly ever visit it. Many of us dream of moving to rural areas - there's a harshness to much of the Australian landscape and yet we still feel a sense of romance about it. For Rural Australian Homes, Leta Keens travelled around Australia to find the 18 homes featured in the book - a wide-ranging and appealing selection that includes a sheep station that has been in the same family for 100 years, a converted general store, an adapted shed, and award-winning architect-designed contemporary houses. Covering every state and the Northern Territory, Rural Australian Homes gives a compelling insight into contemporary life in rural Australia, and offers a glimpse into some of the history that has defined it.

Digging through the myths around Australias most famous artist, many of which he created himself as a masterful self-promoter, this book is the biography that Sidney Nolan deserves. In an authoritative, insightful and often irreverent biography that fully charts Nolans life and work, Nancy Underhill peels back the layers from a complicated, expedient and manipulative artistic genius. She carries the story from Nolans birth in 1917 to his death in 1992, tracing his early life, his experience as a commercial artist, his involvement in the Angry Penguins magazine, his painting and set design, his difficult marriages and friendships with some of the twentieth centurys most famous figures: Patrick White, Albert Tucker, Benjamin Britten, Robert Lowell, Stephen Spender and Kenneth Clark.

History looks back on John Hunter with mixed reviews. Some biographers are critical of his leadership style as the Governor of Port Jackson (Sydney). Others say he was a failure at sea. Linda Groom, however, disagrees on both counts, claiming that Hunter was an outstanding seaman whose mere survival as governor was an achievement for his time. Hunter grew up in Leith, near Edinburgh. In 1754 he joined the Royal Navy and in 1768, when Hunter was 30, he was made master. By 1786 he was captain, and appointed by Lord Howe to the Sirius, flag ship of the First Fleet. In October 1788 Governor Arthur Phillip ordered the Sirius to sail from Port Jackson to Cape Town for supplies. Hunters decision to take the easterly route past Cape Horn made for a record fast passage, even though the Sirius had to dodge icebergs, lost men to scurvy and was nearly wrecked in violent weather off the south of Tasmania. Hunter began his sketchbook in the same year he made his life-saving journey to Cape Town. Twenty-six of Hunters paintings in his sketchbook were copied from paintings by one of his midshipmen, George Raper. This was not only a compliment from the captain to his midshipman but demonstrates his willingness to learn from his work, quite a reversal of the usual naval hierarchy. Although many of the works in the sketchbook are copies, Hunter brings his own (often humorous) interpretation to them.

Some of Australia’s most exciting contemporary art comes from the daughters of the ground-breaking Papunya Tula artists of the 1970s, the founding fathers of the desert art movement. Streets of Papunya is the story of the women painters of Papunya today, rising stars of a new art centre called Papunya Tjupi Arts. Among them are some of the first women in the desert to join the original Papunya art movement, who continue Papunya’s rich history as the birthplace of contemporary Indigenous art. Western Desert art expert Vivien Johnson reveals the whole history of Papunya as a site of art production, from Albert Namatjira’s final paintings, executed in Papunya days before his death in 1959, through Papunya’s glory days of the 1970s and ‘80s, the dark time when it was known as ‘carpetbagging capital of the desert’ to its inspirational renaissance, as its leading painters reinvent Papunya painting for the twenty-first century.
