In Birdland, Australian fine-art photographer Leila Jeffreys presents us with a bird-watching experience like no other, drawing birds out from their leafy shadows and airy territories and presenting them to us with the skill and intricate detail of a portrait painter. The result is a stunning encounter with some of the world's most beautiful birds.

On display are fine feathers of all types-eagles in burnished battle armor, cotton candy-pink cockatoos, owls in spangled evening wear, and the finches and parrots who couldn't settle for just one or two colours, so chose the whole palette instead.

Captured in a moment of stillness, Jeffreys's feathered sitters reveal qualities and features that invite human projection. Meet the sociable gang-gang cockatoos Commander and Mrs. Skyring, always up for a soir e; the dignified and kingly black kite Fenrick; and the adorably gamine Pepper, a southern boobook owl with impossibly huge eyes and irresistibly cute skinny legs.

Sydney-based Jeffreys works with animal rescue and conservation groups to create her portraits. Her love and compassion for her subjects is evident throughout, and every bird has a story, which Jeffreys shares in a profile of nearly every species in the back of the book.

There are working birds, like Soren, the wedge-tailed eagle, who patrols areas to prevent cockatoos from damaging buildings and lorikeets from overindulging on sugar on hotel balconies; Blue, the orange-bellied parrot who is part of a breeding program to increase the population of this critically endangered species; and Sirocco, New Zealand's kakapo conversation superstar.

Birdland invites us to rediscover birds, to gaze unhindered, and to marvel at their many-splendored glory.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are warned that this book may contain images of people who are deceased.

Bitter Fruit is a brand new title from Michael Graham-Stewart, showcasing a collection of early photographs, many previously unpublished, focusing on Indigenous Australians. Presented in a beautiful hardcover, this is a breathtaking document of the Australian experience.

The photographs reproduced in this book were collected over the past decade or so. During this time, online archives have grown in number and size, raising questions about what should be made available to the general public, and who should decide. At the same time, it has become easier to find information about the people who took the photographs, the places they were taken, and, most importantly, the individuals depicted.

If this book has a purpose, it is to offer a sequence other than the familiar one, to broaden and to texture our sense of the histories of the place we know today as Australia. In these photographs, we can find evidence of wrongdoing and suffering, but also of resistance, adaptation, and continuity. Then, too, the images frequently reveal the agency of their 'subjects' - a force that can transcend the problems associated with the moment of making.

Who has not had the frightening experience of stumbling around in the pitch black?

As a child, Alain Badiou went through it when he, along with friends, made up a game called On the stroke of midnight. The furtive discovery of the dark continent of sex in banned magazines, the beauty of black ink on paper, but also the mysteries of the universe and the grief of mourning: these are some of the things we encounter as the philosopher takes us on a trip through the private theater of his mind, at the whim of his memories.

Music, painting, politics, sex, and metaphysics: all contribute to making black more luminous than it has ever been.

When he died in 1992 Brett Whiteley left behind decades of ceaseless activity-some works bound to a particular place or time, others that are masterpieces of light and line.

Whiteley had arrived in Europe in 1960 determined to make an impression. Before long he was the youngest artist to have work acquired by the Tate. With his wife, Wendy, and daughter, Arkie, Whiteley then immersed himself in bohemian New York. But within two years he fled, having failed to break through.

Back in Sydney, he soon became Australia's most celebrated artist. He won the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes in the same year - his prices soared, as did his fame. Among his friends were Francis Bacon and Patrick White, Billy Connolly and Dire Straits. Yet addiction was taking its toll- Whiteley struggled in vain to separate his talent from his disease, and an inglorious end approached.

"The purpose of drawing is to make freshness permanent. Out of billions of seconds of futility, occasionally, sparks of the life force are immutably held forever."

Brett Whiteley wrote these lines in his 1985 notebook about the activity at the very heart of his life as an artist, drawing. For three decades Whiteley bewitched his audience with his mercurial character and unconventional behaviour, producing original and challenging works such as The American Dream and Alchemy. He was an indefatigable draughtsman, putting great energy into his drawings, which stand alone as a vital part of his oeuvre. In his finest drawings he concentrated all his talents to produce incandescent moments of vision. Nowhere is he more pure than in his remarkable drawings. In these we find the essence of Brett Whiteley.

Brett Whiteley Drawings includes 180 of Whiteley's most important drawings, from early views made as a student to the last series of works made in Paris in 1989, before his untimely and tragic death. Also illustrated are pages from Whiteley's notebooks, in which he drew and wrote his reflections on art, painting and drawing. The book has been created by Lou Klepac, who first discussed the idea of this book with the artist before his death, and subsequently organised the exhibition 'On the Road to Berry', of Brett Whiteley and Lloyd Rees drawings in 1993. There is an essay about the drawings, quotes from the artist and a fascinating interview with Michael Johnson, edited by Barry Pearce, about Whiteley's time at Lintas in Sydney, when they were colleagues and close friends.

AUTHOR: Lou Klepac is an art historian; he is the author of a number of books including 'Lloyd Rees Drawings', 'Russell Drysdale', 'John Coburn', 'William Robinson', 'James Gleeson', 'Nora Heysen' and 'Horace Trenerry'. Among the many exhibitions he has curated are: Sicket Paintings; Contemporary Australian Drawing; Sickert Drawings, Russell Drysdale Drawings, Russell Drysdale Paintings, The Road to Berry Lloyd Rees and Brett Whiteley drawings, Giorgio Morandi Paintings and Etchings, La Serenissima the fascination of Venice; Nora Heysen retrospective; James Gleeson Beyond the Screen of Sight; Donald Friend a charmed life. In 1980 he was made a Cavaliere della Repubblica Italiana; in 1996 he was awarded an OAM and in 2006 the University of Sydney conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa). 180 drawings
