    SELF-PORTRAIT : A CULTURAL HISTORY

    ISBN: 9780500292112
    Title: SELF-PORTRAIT : A CULTURAL HISTORY
    Author: HALL JAMES
    Format: PAPER COVER
Publishing status: OCTOBER 2015 NEW RELEASE

In this broad cultural survey, James Hall brilliantly maps the history of self-portraiture, from the earliest myths of Narcissus and the Christian tradition of bearing witness to the prolific self-image-making of todays contemporary artists.

Along the way he reveals the importance of the medieval mirror craze; the confessional self-portraits of Titian and Michelangelo; the role of biography for serial self-portraitists such as Courbet and van Gogh; themes of sex and genius in works by Munch and Bonnard; and the latest developments in our globalized age. Hall covers the full range of self-portraits, from comic and caricature self-portraits to invented or imaginary ones, and looks deeply into the worlds and mindsets of the artists who have created them.

Offering a rich and lively history, this is an essential read for all those interested in this most enduringly popular and humane of art forms.

History looks back on John Hunter with mixed reviews. Some biographers are critical of his leadership style as the Governor of Port Jackson (Sydney). Others say he was a failure at sea. Linda Groom, however, disagrees on both counts, claiming that Hunter was an outstanding seaman whose mere survival as governor was an achievement for his time. Hunter grew up in Leith, near Edinburgh. In 1754 he joined the Royal Navy and in 1768, when Hunter was 30, he was made master. By 1786 he was captain, and appointed by Lord Howe to the Sirius, flag ship of the First Fleet. In October 1788 Governor Arthur Phillip ordered the Sirius to sail from Port Jackson to Cape Town for supplies. Hunters decision to take the easterly route past Cape Horn made for a record fast passage, even though the Sirius had to dodge icebergs, lost men to scurvy and was nearly wrecked in violent weather off the south of Tasmania. Hunter began his sketchbook in the same year he made his life-saving journey to Cape Town. Twenty-six of Hunters paintings in his sketchbook were copied from paintings by one of his midshipmen, George Raper. This was not only a compliment from the captain to his midshipman but demonstrates his willingness to learn from his work, quite a reversal of the usual naval hierarchy. Although many of the works in the sketchbook are copies, Hunter brings his own (often humorous) interpretation to them.

Some of Australia’s most exciting contemporary art comes from the daughters of the ground-breaking Papunya Tula artists of the 1970s, the founding fathers of the desert art movement. Streets of Papunya is the story of the women painters of Papunya today, rising stars of a new art centre called Papunya Tjupi Arts. Among them are some of the first women in the desert to join the original Papunya art movement, who continue Papunya’s rich history as the birthplace of contemporary Indigenous art. Western Desert art expert Vivien Johnson reveals the whole history of Papunya as a site of art production, from Albert Namatjira’s final paintings, executed in Papunya days before his death in 1959, through Papunya’s glory days of the 1970s and ‘80s, the dark time when it was known as ‘carpetbagging capital of the desert’ to its inspirational renaissance, as its leading painters reinvent Papunya painting for the twenty-first century.

Once considered part of the counterculture movement, tattooing is now undoubtedly a mainstream trend. Forty per cent of Americans between the ages of 26 and 40 have at least one tattoo, and these figures only go up in countries where inking has long been a part of the local culture. While tattoos have an ancient history beginning as talismans of protection, they are constantly evolving as skilled practitioners reinterpret traditional motifs and experiment with new ones, such as art brut and surrealist designs. With more than 1,000 illustrations from 125 of the most important artists working today, this book is the most comprehensive survey of tattooing ever published. Collected here are designs from around the globe that span a broad range of styles, including Japanese and East Asian iconography, classic Americana, tribal blackwork, biomech, black-and-gray portraiture, photorealism, and modernism. Featuring the work of tattoo legends alongside pieces by pioneering artists who are pushing the limits of the medium, this visually arresting survey is the essential reference work for anyone interested in this exploding art form.
